Criminal Law

Crimes against the person involve direct harm or the threat of harm to an individual. These include assault, homicide, kidnapping, and other acts that put someone’s safety at risk. They are often considered the most serious offenses because they directly affect human life and well-being.

Crimes against property focus on interfering with another person’s right to use or enjoy their possessions. Theft, burglary, vandalism, and arson all fall into this category. While they may not directly harm a person, they cause significant financial and emotional impact.

Statutory crimes are offenses created by specific laws or statutes. These often include alcohol-related crimes, drug violations, traffic offenses, and white-collar crimes. Unlike common law crimes, statutory crimes exist because legislation has defined them as illegal.

Inchoate crimes are crimes that were begun but not completed, or acts taken in preparation for committing another crime. Attempt, conspiracy, and solicitation are common examples. Even if the intended crime does not occur, the preparation or intent itself is punishable.
